We have not even reached mid-October yet, but the atmosphere in the Alps already feels like mid-winter, with below-average temperatures and snow that has already blanketed the peaks down to 1500 meters above sea level.
The autumn landscape has been replaced by a winter one in many resorts, from the Aosta Valley to Veneto, across all the regions of the Alpine arc.
Among these is Alto Adige, which welcomed the first snowflakes on the Dolomites and above all recorded significant snowfalls near the Austrian border above 2000 meters.
For South Tyrol, the ski season has already begun thanks to the opening of the slopes on the Val Senales glacier, where athletes from the Italian National Team as well as from France, Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway are training.
The other valley preparing for the upcoming winter season is Solda all’Ortles, traditionally one of the first ski resorts to open its lifts and a benchmark for the many skiers who cannot wait to put their skis back on.
Since the beginning of the month, Solda has benefited from two snowfalls that have whitened the upper slopes as well as the runs leading down to the valley at 1900 meters.
Ski lifts open from October 22
The Alto Adige ski area has long scheduled the start date of the season: in Solda, the ski lifts will open their doors on Saturday, October 22.
With only 10 days to go until the start of the season, snow conditions look very promising (see live webcam from Solda), helped not only by the snowfalls of recent days—about 20/30 cm of fresh snow—but also by artificial snowmaking, which has already been active for a few weeks.
In Solda, snow cannons run non-stop as soon as temperatures allow, with the artificial snowmaking systems operating all night long both at high altitude and in the valley.
Barring any unusual weather changes, there should be no problems for Solda, and on the 22nd skiers will be able to hit the slopes again!
