Bormio changes its mind, lifts open as early as November 2

It almost looks like a head-to-head challenge between Adamello and Bormio, as both announce the opening of their ski lifts well ahead of other ski resorts.

Bormio, the first to announce an early lift opening, had originally stated that the slopes would reopen on November 15, followed by the announcement from the Adamello ski area declaring that its lifts would open as early as November 2.

Almost 15 days ahead of rival Bormio—yet its rival wasted no time in raising the stakes and bringing its own opening forward to November 2 as well.

It almost seems like a race to see who reopens the lifts first in order to win over “snow-starved” skiers right away.

Bormio backs up this change with hard figures, showing how high-altitude conditions are already favorable for skiing by early November.
Over the weekend of the October snowfall, temperatures at high altitude stayed around -10°C and all snow cannons were able to go into action, immediately producing 20,000 cubic meters of artificial snow; moreover, 40 cm of fresh snow accumulated at high altitude, enough to create the base layer.
Although temperatures have now risen again, at night they drop below freezing, making it possible to continue snowmaking—optimal conditions that will allow the slopes to be prepared.

No rivalry, then, just favorable conditions across almost the entire Alpine arc thanks to an early taste of winter and forecasts calling for early cold weather across all of Italy from mid-November.

For those who simply cannot wait and want to take advantage of the early opening right away, the lifts available in Bormio starting November 2 will be:

  • “Bormio 2000-Cima Bianca” cable car
  • “Valbella-Bormio 3000” chairlift

Please note that all tourist promotions in the resort will take effect only 2 days after the lift opening, namely on November 4.

For the remaining slopes of Bormio, skiers will have to wait a month or more:
In Santa Caterina Valfurva, the lift opening is scheduled for November 29, 2008.
In Valdidentro and San Colombano, skiing will be possible from December 20, 2008 to April 18, 2009.

A season that promises to be long and intense—in short, a true pleasure for all skiers.
