It’s common knowledge that children love snow, just as it’s well known that one of the little ones’ idols is Mickey Mouse, Topolino in Italian.
From the union of these two elements, now twenty-nine years ago, the Trofeo Topolino was born: a cross-country skiing race dedicated to all the youngest skiers.
The twenty-ninth edition of the trophy will take place on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2012, in what is by now its traditional home, Val di Fiemme, where the event was born back in 1984. After being hosted on the Brozzin trail in Castello di Fiemme and at Passo di Lavazé, in 1993 it found its permanent home on the snow of the Centro del Fondo di Lago di Tesero, where it is still held today.
The Trofeo Topolino takes place over two days, to make room for all the athletes and all the events it offers.
Saturday, January 21 will kick off the event with the spectacular and by now famous opening ceremony. As for the sporting side, the races for the youngest categories will be held, namely Baby (born in 2002/2003) and Cuccioli (2000/2001), who will compete in classic technique over distances that vary according to age, from a minimum of 1.5 km to a maximum of 4 km.
On Saturday there will also be plenty of side events and activities: from the “Disney evening” to the village set up by the Lago di Tesero trails. A very special race, on the other hand, is the Trofeo Topolino Revival, dedicated to athletes who took part in the Trofeo Topolino in the past.
The races on Sunday the 22nd, on the other hand, are reserved for the older athletes: Ragazzi (born in 1998/1999) and Allievi (born in 1996/1997). Their race is in free technique, on courses that vary according to age, up to a maximum of 7 km.
The event will close with a big party involving all the young athletes and their families, with a special prize for all the most loyal participants.
An interesting note is that over the years the Trofeo Topolino has become a benchmark event and, for some athletes, it was the first major trophy, the one that opened the way to the national team for them. Among them, for example, are Valerio Checchi, Loris Frasnelli, Magda Genuin, Lara Peyrot and Marina Piller.
