We are experiencing a decidedly unusual start to the winter season these past few weeks, with the Alpine arc still mostly green while the Apennine chain is blanketed in white from Emilia-Romagna all the way down to Molise.
It has been a long time since the Immaculate Conception holiday weekend marked the start of the ski season across the Apennines. For many resorts, the December 8 long weekend will be the perfect opportunity to capitalize on the snow that fell in recent weeks and kick off the ski season.
Snow conditions are good, and many ski areas have not even needed artificial snowmaking to prepare their runs—in fact, in several cases heavy snowfalls required slope-packing and safety work to consolidate the snowpack on the steepest pitches.
Here is a closer look at open ski lifts across the Apennines for the holiday weekend:
Emilia-Romagna
> Monte Cimone
The season already got underway last weekend to the delight of the first skiers of the winter; abundant fresh snow has made it possible to confirm the nearly complete opening of the ski area.

> Corno alle Scale
On Saturday, December 5, the ski lifts at Corno alle Scale will open with a promotional €25 skipass and skiing on the Tomba 1 and Polla slopes as well as the nursery slope.

Tuscany
> Abetone
The Tuscan ski area kicks off its season on Saturday, December 5, with a partial opening on natural snow.

Abruzzo
Abruzzo’s ski resorts will take center stage over this Immaculate Conception ski weekend: heavy snowfalls in recent weeks blanketed many of the region’s main resorts with nearly half a meter of snow, allowing several of them to open their doors as early as last weekend.

One of the very first ski resorts to open and one of those offering the best snow conditions for the Immaculate Conception weekend, with the snowpark open as well.
