50 cm of fresh snow in the Alps, more Snow starting Thursday

Snow January 15

snow january 15 A full 50 cm of fresh snow has fallen in the Alps above 1,500/1,600 meters of altitude, with widespread snowfalls even below 1,000 m.
As one can easily imagine, the return of snow was warmly welcomed by tourism operators: after Christmas holidays spent amid alternating rain and snow, the snowfalls that yesterday reached even below the fateful 1,000-meter mark have “refreshed” all ski areas.

Now all ski resorts can count on good snow cover, and nearly all ski lifts are open.

This snowfall will also give an added boost to the opening of snowparks and freeride areas.
Among the parks already open are the one in Obereggen and the Alpe di Siusi snowpark, the latter having just been completed across all its lines and now 100% operational.

We can safely say that the ski season is in full swing, with skiing underway across nearly all ski areas, the Apennines included.

More major snowfalls starting Thursday

The sunshine currently bathing the mountains is numbered: starting Thursday evening the 16th, snow will return to the north-western slopes, and on Friday the storm system will spread to the north-east, affecting the entire Alpine arc.

Snow will reach low altitudes (400-500 m) in the Aosta Valley and Piedmont and beyond: snow could also return to Bolzano and other cities at the foot of the mountains, though the snow line will later tend to rise to 1,000-1,200 meters in the Prealps and eastern sectors while remaining lower in the north-west.

Heavy snowfalls are expected especially above 1,500 meters; around 2,000 meters, 1 meter of fresh snow is forecast, with snowfalls persisting at least until Sunday the 19th.
