Snow returns to the Alps: snowfall down to 1,700 meters and first ski lift openings

After an autumn that was slow to arrive, dominated by high pressure and above-average temperatures even at high altitude, the Alpine weather is finally experiencing a change of course. Weather fronts accompanied by a significant drop in temperatures have brought the first substantial snowfalls, radically transforming the mountain scenery.

The peaks have turned white, with heavy snowfall above 2,500/2,700 meters, especially in the northern sector of the Alps. However, snow has also made an appearance at lower altitudes, reaching 1,700 meters at Carezza Ski, in the heart of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. The average snow line has stabilized above 2,000 meters, with a further drop expected in the coming days.

More Snowfall on the Way

Winter finally seems to have arrived in the Alps, and further snowfall is expected over the next few days, with the snow line continuing to drop. Forecasters predict fresh snowfall above 2,000 meters, a clear sign that autumn has given way to the cold season at high altitude.

This change of scenery is just what mountain enthusiasts and industry operators have been waiting for, ready to make the most of the new weather conditions to kick off the ski season.

First Ski Lift Openings

With the arrival of snow and falling temperatures, several resorts are getting ready to welcome winter sports enthusiasts. The ski resort of Solda all’Ortles (South Tyrol) is ready to kick off the new season, albeit with a slight delay compared to previous years.

On November 6, the high-altitude slopes of Solda will open. The resort has already taken advantage of the first cold spells to produce artificial snow, though recent and upcoming snowfalls will undoubtedly create the ideal snowpack for skiers.

If the weather fronts bring heavy snowfalls and favorable weather conditions, further early season openings cannot be ruled out, although it is still too early to tell.
