Artificial Snowmaking: snow cannons in action to prepare the ski slopes

Artificial snowmaking 2012

artificial snowmaking 2012In the Alps, the artificial snow “war” has begun, with snow cannons in action across almost all resorts. With the snowfalls of recent days, freezing cold has also arrived alongside the snow, bringing temperatures well below zero overnight, especially above 2,000 m in altitude. This early-winter climate is ideal for switching on snowmaking systems and producing the first artificial snow, which is particularly excellent for building the base layer of the slopes.
From the Aosta Valley to Friuli, snow cannons are running at full capacity in almost every ski area. The first to start artificial snowmaking were the ski areas of Trentino Alto Adige at the highest altitudes (Madonna di Campiglio, Adamello, Solda…), quickly followed by other ski areas such as Livigno, Monterosa, Cortina…
Now artificial snowmaking systems are active almost everywhere, working at full speed to prepare the slopes ahead of the upcoming winter season. Increasingly snow-scarce winters and fluctuating temperatures make artificial snow the only lifeline available to resorts to ensure slopes in good condition even when the weather would not otherwise allow it.
Massive investments are being made not only by Trentino Alto Adige (with many ski resorts 100% covered by artificial snowmaking), but also by Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, where the regions have invested several million euros to install new systems and modernize existing ones.
