Snow Returns, Snowfall Forecast Down to the Plains

Snow in the city

In some Italian mountain resorts it hasn’t snowed for as long as 2 months. What we are facing is a winter without snow: the snowfalls that have marked these winter months have been few and far between. It seems, however, that this lack of snow is finally coming to an end.
All the forecasts point to snow in the north-west from as early as Saturday night, with heavy snowfall above 1,000 m but snow falling from as low as 500-600 m.
Early on Saturday morning the weather front will hit the Aosta Valley, Piedmont and Lombardy, bringing snow right down to the plains (the first snowfall of the year in Milan) [watch out for the obligation to carry snow chains on board, an ordinance in force in many provinces].

Heavy snowfall is expected on all the mountains, while in the cities the snow will cover the roads only in the morning, giving way to rain in the afternoon. Sunday will also bring widespread snowfall across the Alpine ranges of the Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy and part of Trentino Alto Adige.

Worth noting is the return of snow to the Maritime Alps, which until now had not received any snow at all. Around 50 cm of fresh snow is forecast at Prato Nevoso!
No such luck, however, for the mountains in the north-east (among the hardest hit by this snowless winter): here the snow will not arrive, and Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy but dry.
