More tourists, overnight stays up 10%. It is a good result that Plan de Corones is banking this ski season. Although the winter has not been one of the best, and although Austria has fought fiercely on the advertising front, Plan de Corones is taking home a result worth framing.
The ski season now drawing to a close has been a truly troubled one, due to an anomalous winter with very few, meagre snowfalls as well as hostile temperature conditions (thermal inversion) that even prevented the production of artificial snow.

What the slopes looked like on December 1, 2011
At the end of November the snow had not even reached the summit of the Kronplatz (2,200 m), and the first snowfalls only arrived around December 10, leaving barely 20 cm of snow on the ground.
Plan de Corones nevertheless managed to open its lifts without delay: thanks to hard work on snowmaking, the staff of the South Tyrolean resort succeeded in preparing the first runs from scratch.
The ski resort can boast snowmaking systems capable of fully covering its more than 100 km of ski slopes, offering perfect snow conditions whatever the weather. What is more, in 2011 alone a good 35 million euros were invested to improve the ski facilities.

But this increase in overnight stays is not just down to the “snow cannons”: the result stems from the professional management of the whole tourist area, trained and organised like a major European ski hub. The ski area has rolled out many initiatives, from modern ski lifts to the numerous modern mountain huts located along the slopes, from a very varied range of sports (sledging, cross-country skiing, horse rides) to holiday packages designed around the needs of families, couples, young people and groups of skiers, so as to satisfy everyone by offering the best possible service.
