Skiing at Christmas, 9 recommended ski resorts

Snow in the Apennines

What better time than Christmas to have fun on the ski slopes?! The weather conditions are ideal and these Christmas holidays are shaping up to be really interesting.
But which resort should you choose for a fun day on the snow? We have drawn up a list of recommended ski areas, based on the various features that set them apart.

New lifts

If you are a fan of cable transport systems, or you simply love anything new, then you can’t miss a day on the slopes riding the new ski lifts.
Madonna di Campiglio – The pearl of the Brenta Dolomites has just inaugurated the new Pinzolo-Campiglio Express gondola lift. As the name makes clear, the new lift will link the slopes of Pinzolo with those of nearby Madonna di Campiglio: until a few days ago, the only way to ski in the 2 ski areas in a single day was to drive from one to the other, but not anymore! Whichever resort you decide to start your day in, you can always end up skiing in both without ever unbuckling your boots. A modern link with every comfort, for enjoying a good 150 km of ski slopes.
Alleghe – One of the most important ski resorts in the Belluno area, at the foot of the imposing Monte Civetta (3,000 m). A paradise for skiers, who for the past few days have been able to get up the mountain on a new lift, the “Piani di Pezzè – Col dei Baldi” gondola lift. The lift will have a capacity of 2,800 people per hour, covering the 500 metres of vertical drop between the 1,445 m of Piani di Pezzé and the 1,915 m of Col dei Baldi in just over 5 minutes, at a speed of about 6 m/s.

Snowpark

If by now you just can’t sit still and it hurts to look at last year’s photos taken in the park, then it means the time has come to get back to jumping! The lack of snow is delaying the snowboard season, but some resorts are already ready to welcome riders!
Bardonecchia – thanks to the snowfall that hit Piedmont over the past few days, the operators of the Bardonecchia ski area were able to start building the snowpark. In no time the park was set up at 2,000 m (where the best snow is), and it opened its doors on December 24. Throughout the Christmas holidays snowboarders will be able to ride and enjoy a huge number of features, including rails, boxes and kickers, as well as a Lounge Area.
Val Senales – Snowboarders’ paradise: the Val Senales glacier has always been a favourite destination for riders, and plenty of snow plus professional management make this park the right place to have fun snowboarding over the Christmas holidays.
Plan de Corones – The new “Korer” Jib Park, run by F-Tech, has just been inaugurated. It is located in Brunico and offers various features where you can ride and have fun on the snow of South Tyrol.

Fresh snow

This winter it’s hard to find powder… unless you’ve planned a trip to the Aosta Valley.
Cervinia – the Matterhorn ski resort confirms itself as one of the snowiest in Italy: with over 300 cm of snow up high and almost 2 metres in the valley, it is certainly the snowiest area in Italy right now. With the new cable car you can go up to 3,800 m on the Plateau Rosà and ski down to the village at 2,000 m, or descend to an altitude of 1,500 towards Zermatt on the Swiss side.
Monterosa – As on the Matterhorn, plenty of snow has fallen on the Monte Rosa massif too: up high the snow is measured in metres, and the snow cover is excellent down in the valley as well. The Freeride Paradise area is ideal for anyone who wants to venture off-piste, always keeping an eye on the avalanche bulletin before setting off.

Apennines

Italy’s oldest mountains have taken advantage of the weather front that came down from the Arctic to change their landscape and plunge straight into a magnificent winter.
Abetone – Tuscany’s most famous ski resort responded promptly to the arrival of the snow: thanks to artificial snowmaking some slopes were prepared, and within just a few days the first ski lifts were able to open. A snowy Christmas for the Pistoia mountains.
Valli del Cimone – the Cimone ski area has already started welcoming skiers from Emilia and beyond. The snow that fell over the past few days, together with snowmaking in true Dolomites style, has allowed the season to get under way.
