Where to ski in Austria in November 2026: five glaciers already open

For skiers who don’t want to wait until December to click back into their bindings, Austria’s glaciers have already kicked off the season and make it possible to plan November 2026 outings across five different high-altitude ski areas. Between Tyrol and the Salzburg region, Pitztal, Kaunertal, Stubai, Hintertux, and Kitzsteinhorn are already in operation—five destinations that share high elevations yet differ markedly in access, slope layout, and on-mountain atmosphere. While Pitztal reaches the highest point at 3,440 meters and neighboring Kaunertal lets you drive right up to the edge of the snow, at Stubai, Hintertux, and Kitzsteinhorn open-mountain runs already share the stage with major autumn snowparks.

Those very differences help skiers choose the right destination for a November weekend, weighing not only driving distance from Italy or across the Alps but also the kind of ski day they have in mind: from early-morning carving on firm winter-like snow to freestyle sessions or testing new 2026/27 gear.

Pitztal and Kaunertal: two opposite ways of reaching high altitude

In western Tyrol, Pitztal was among the first to open its gates, launching the season back on September 26 and setting up a long calendar that will carry skiers all the way to May 2, 2027 (while the nearby winter ski area of Rifflsee will join in starting December 12). Here the day starts very early: the first run of the underground Gletscherexpress funicular departs the valley floor at 7:00 a.m., taking skiers straight to the base of the glacier. From there, the Wildspitzbahn gondola climbs to 3,440 meters on the Hinterer Brunnenkogel, joined in its autumn setup by the Gletscherseebahn and training lifts. It is ideal terrain for anyone who loves making the most of the first hours of daylight at the highest elevations in the Eastern Alps. Over the first weekend of the month, from Friday, November 6 to Sunday, November 8, 2026, the glacier also hosts the Pitztal Testival, with a 30-euro test pass available for trying out new-season skis and snowboards on the slopes.

Stepping into the next valley over reveals a completely different setup. In the Kaunertal, where lifts have been spinning since October 17, instead of riding a funicular you drive up the scenic alpine glacier road from Feichten, which brings cars and ski buses right up to 2,750 meters at the foot of the slopes. That rare glacier convenience is especially valued by sit-skiers thanks to level access directly from the parking lots onto the snow. November skiing centers around the Falginjochbahn, Karlesjochbahn, Fernerlift, and Sonnenlift, with the first two lifts climbing past 3,100 meters to serve the upper section of the ski area.

From Stubai to Hintertux and Kaprun: long runs, snowparks, and gear tests

For skiers arriving from Italy over the Brenner Pass, the most immediate benchmark remains the Stubai Glacier, open since October 9. Valley access is handled by the Gamsgartenbahn and 3S Eisgratbahn gondolas, which lead to the slopes of the Eisjoch, Daunferner, and Rotadl sectors: during this autumn phase, skiing extends down to the Gamsgarten mid-mountain station, from which skiers ride the gondola back down to the valley. Alongside classic pistes, November is the headline month for freestyle riders thanks to the Stubai Zoo XL on the Gaiskarferner: the XL setup featuring Pro, Medium, Jib, and Easy lines is scheduled from October 24 to November 29, 2026, with individual features opening as park shaping progresses, allowing groups of friends to alternate groomed runs and park laps in the same day.

Moving east toward the Zillertal, the Hintertux Glacier likewise pairs high-alpine skiing with freestyle at the foot of the Olperer. Starting from the valley floor at the head of the Tux Valley and climbing through the intermediate levels of Sommerberg and Tuxer Fernerhaus, the lifts push the skiable domain up to 3,250 meters on the Gefrorene Wand. While the other mountains in the valley will open their winter season on December 4, skiing is already in full swing on the upper glacier slopes alongside training sessions in the Betterpark, which welcomes skiers and snowboarders throughout the month until the end of November.

Further east, in the Salzburg region, the lineup of five Austrian glaciers is rounded out by the Kitzsteinhorn, above Kaprun. Riding up from the Kesselfallstraße lifts brings skiers to the runs already open down to 2,450 meters at the Alpincenter, the true high-altitude hub of the mountain, where the first section of the Glacier Park also opened on October 17. On Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 2026, the snows of the Kitzsteinhorn host the Ski & Board Test dedicated to the 2026/27 collections: here equipment testing is free of charge, while the lift pass is not included and must be purchased separately. Five mountains already in the swing of the season, ready to deliver the first real days of winter while waiting for colder temperatures to progressively open runs all the way down to the valley floors.
