The Trofeo Marmotta is a spectacular international ski mountaineering race which, for the fourth year in a row, will be held in Val Martello (BZ). The individual race in classic format is organised by ASV Martello, and the novelty of the 2011 edition is that the trophy is part of the ISMF World Cup, the Ski Mountaineering World Cup.
In fact, the South Tyrolean race scheduled for Sunday, March 6 will be the fourth and penultimate stage of the world circuit, after the two French stages at Pelvoux and Gavarnie in January and the race at Tambre, in the Belluno area, in February, and before the finale in Zakopane (POL) in April.
This edition will also be remembered because it marks the first time a Ski Mountaineering World Cup has come to South Tyrol.
In the 2010 edition of the Trofeo Marmotta, a new course was tried out, more technical and spectacular than the previous ones, and it was praised by almost all the participants, so this year it was decided to use an almost identical course. Only a few changes will be made to comply with the international ISMF rules.
The course of the men’s open race is 13.8 km long with a total vertical gain of 1,740 metres. For women and the youth categories, on the other hand, the vertical gain is 1,300 metres over a length of 9.8 km.
The Trofeo Marmotta also counts towards the Austria Skitour Cup 2011 and the Trofeo Regione Trentino-Südtirol.
All athletes holding a membership card of the international federation ISMF can take part in the Trofeo Marmotta.
Val Martello is also getting ready to host this prestigious event from a tourism point of view, to serve as an enticing showcase for lovers of snow, sport and unspoilt nature.
