Ski Mountaineering: Everything is ready for Transcavallo 2013

Transcavallo 2013

transcavallo 2013The courses for the 30th edition of the Transcavallo, scheduled for this coming weekend, have been laid out and finalized for several days now; only the weather system forecast for the next few hours casts some doubt on whether the original routes can be used.
However, Vittorio Romor, president of the Dolomiti Ski-Alp club, is confident that the forecast snowfall will not be too heavy. «For the moment everything is confirmed,» Romor said. «The weather forecast does not call for heavy snowfall, though we also have backup routes ready in case it snows heavily at high altitude. Over the next few hours we will monitor how the situation develops; according to forecasts, between 10 and 15 centimeters of fresh snow should fall. At that level, provided there is no strong wind, there will be no major issues holding the races along the original courses.»

As for the race schedule, athlete accreditation and bib pickup will begin on Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM, followed at 6:30 PM by the briefing for the first stage.
On Saturday morning, the start of the Senior race is scheduled for 9:00 AM at Col Indes (Tambre – Belluno), with the first finishers expected roughly two hours later, at 11:00 AM. At 6:30 PM on Saturday, the technical briefing will be held for Sunday’s stage, which will also start from Col Indes at 9:00 AM.

In addition to serving as a round of the youth Italian Cup – Scarpa Trophy, the Transcavallo will award the Veneto Regional Team Championship for seniors and the individual regional titles for the Junior and Cadet categories.
Since 2004, when it hosted its first World Cup round, the Organizing Committee has prepared spectacular, highly technical race courses in line with modern ski mountaineering standards—yet the care put into the event goes well beyond course preparation. «From the very beginning,» Romor concluded, «we have wanted to keep Transcavallo’s prize money above average—in fact, the total prize purse exceeds ten thousand euros. We know that the success of the event comes from the participation of amateur athletes, which is why we strive to provide great perks like race gifts and meals while keeping entry fees to a minimum. At the same time, we are well aware that the prestige of the race also comes from the illustrious names inscribed on its roll of honor.»
