ski lift openings 2011-2012

Cervinia opens its ski lifts on October 29 on the Plateau Rosà

The snow has already arrived and the ski areas are getting ready for the new winter season. One in particular is already set to take on the new ski season: Cervinia.

The ski resort at the foot of the famous Matterhorn is one of the first to open its lifts, thanks to the Plateau Rosà Glacier, which lies at an altitude of 4,000 m. Here there is snow even in summer, but after the months of summer skiing the glacier is closed for a short break and welcomes skiers again with the arrival of winter. This guarantees the glacier a period of rest, helped also by the generous autumn snowfalls.

In this early autumn the snow has not kept us waiting, whitening all the surrounding mountains and even coming close to the centre of the village of Cervinia. Snow in September on the Matterhorn is not a rare event, but it is an excellent sign for the coming winter, after a hot summer even at high altitude.

Thanks to the favourable conditions, the Cervinia ski area has decided to open its doors on October 29, 2011.

It will be a partial opening and skiing will be possible only on the Plateau Rosà Glacier (Swiss side of the Matterhorn); however, if conditions are favourable, further openings as early as the first days of November are not ruled out.

The chosen date coincides with last year’s opening, no delay, a positive sign that confirms Cervinia as one of the most important high-altitude ski centres.
