There’s snow in the air in Austria: in Hintertux the 2011/2012 winter season is about to begin.
As is tradition, the Tyrolean ski area is one of the first to open the winter season: thanks to the glacier, which lies at an altitude of 3,200 m, snow cover is guaranteed. Although the summer heat made itself felt in the Austrian Alps too, the Hintertux glacier managed to recover very well as soon as temperatures dropped in recent weeks. The last significant accumulation dates back to the snowfall of September 18-19, when more than 60 cm of snow fell, turning the valleys below white as well.
In recent days the snow groomers have been working hard to sort out the runs and prepare the slopes, and some lifts have already opened their doors, welcoming ski clubs and the first die-hard skiers.
The official opening of the 2011/2012 winter season will be on Friday September 30, when all the glacier lifts will open, along with the snowpark, one of the first to resume operations.
From September 30 to October 2 Hintertux will host several opening events, the most important being the HotZoneTV opening, which returns with the event that draws riders from all over Europe to the Austrian snow. In addition to the facilities polished up for the start of the season, the test area will play a major role: there, snowboarders will be able to try out the new products for the 2011/12 winter season for themselves, with no fewer than 20 industry brands present.
