Val di Fassa: New Alba – Col dei Rossi Cable Car Opens on Saturday, December 19

On December 19, 2015, the new lift officially opens, enhancing the quality of the valley’s skiable terrain and putting the Ladin valley in pole position for ski lift innovation.

A ski tour across the valley’s ski areas—from Buffaure in Pozza to Col Rodella in Campitello—spanning more than 73 kilometers. Entering service on December 19, 2015, the new cable car links Alba and its Ciampac ski area directly with Col dei Rossi in the Belvedere ski area of Canazei: a thrilling addition for skiers who choose the slopes of Val di Fassa as well as for fans of long ski circuits, especially the Sellaronda, which can now be reached on skis directly from Pozza.

Following the creation of the Vulcano black run in Pozza during the 2014–2015 season and the widening of the Ciampac black run in Alba and the Thöni slope at Ciampedìe in Vigo, Val di Fassa once again leads the way in lift modernization thanks to the work begun in 2014 by Doleda Impianti Funiviari spa—representing an investment of around €18 million—on the new Doppelmayr cableway.
Built to a “Funifor” design, the lift measures 2,260 meters in length and covers a vertical rise of 883 meters (average gradient 42%) at a speed of 12 m/s, with an hourly capacity of 1,120 passengers (two 100-passenger cabins).
A true jewel of ropeway engineering that expands skiable connectivity across Val di Fassa while helping protect this section of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites: by providing another major high-altitude access point, it reduces road traffic on the valley floor and effectively replaces the ski bus link between Alba and Canazei.

More new upgrades

The Alba–Col dei Rossi cable car is not the only lift upgrade in Val di Fassa for the 2015–2016 winter: the iconic cable car cabins that carry thousands of freeriders in winter and hikers in summer from Passo Pordoi up to Sass Pordoi (2,950 m) are also being replaced with aerodynamic new cabins featuring larger panoramic windows for even better views of the scenery.
Meanwhile, in the Alpe Lusia – Passo San Pellegrino ski area, another major upgrade sees the Falcade–Le Buse chairlift (departing from Falcade) replaced by a brand-new 8-passenger gondola lift, cutting ride times and providing a much more comfortable journey over its 1,890-meter length (685 m vertical rise, hourly capacity of 2,400 passengers).
