Ready, steady, go!
The countdown is over and the opening date of the Les Deux Alpes ski lifts has finally arrived. From June 16 until September 1, 2012, hundreds upon hundreds of skiers and snowboarders will be having fun on the snow of the glacier of this famous French ski resort (while down in the cities people will be melting in the heat).
Les Deux Alpes opens with the glacier in good condition thanks to the winter snowfalls and to the spring snowfalls that kept bringing snow until just a few days ago. There are 260 centimeters of snow up top (3,600 m): not bad, but less than the more than 3 meters of snow measured at 3,200 m on the Hintertux glacier (Austria).
This summer the day pass will cost €35.30, while the weekly pass will cost €206.50, with discounts for kids under 13 and the over-65s.
Snowpark Les Deux Alpes, the 2012 summer season gets under way
2 Alpes has always been the snowboarders’ Olympus in summer: here, more than on any other glacier, snowboarding gets plenty of room, with a snowpark that has nothing to envy the huge winter parks.
For summer 2012 the glacier will set aside no fewer than 6 dedicated areas for riders:
Beginner zone: on the left side of the glacier, once again this year, an area has been reserved for novice snowboarders trying freestyle for the first time (or nearly). It will be served by its own surface lift. Central area: a zone with a Big Air and a Hip along with other features; right next to it there will be an area dedicated exclusively to slopestyle. Towards the right, along the whole glacier, there will instead be the area for beginners and intermediate riders.
Below these 2 areas are the 2 magnificent Half Pipes, served by a single dedicated surface lift. One of these pipes qualifies as a Superpipe, measuring 6.5 meters wide by 140 long!
Of course, as every summer, the park will be the hub of a myriad of events, some of them of international standing.
