Tomorrow morning the storm system that brought snow back across the entire Alpine arc today—blanketing the peaks and valleys of Italy’s main ski resorts after a long wait—will finally wind down.
For once, the weather forecasts were spot on: the long-awaited snow arrived, draping the entire Alpine arc in white from Valle d’Aosta to Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Varying snow lines and accumulations were recorded across the different Alpine sectors, with the northwest leading the way both in snow depth on the ground and in the lowest snow line.
In Piedmont, snowfalls reached all the way down to 600 meters above sea level and were particularly heavy at mid- to high altitudes, where accumulations exceed 30 cm at 1,500 meters and reach half a meter in resorts such as Prato Nevoso.
It is sweet redemption for the ski areas of Sestriere and Limone Piemonte, where winter had hitherto brought only an anomalous drought.
Heavy snowfalls also hit the Monterosa ski area (around 50 cm at high altitude), with significant snowfalls in Valtellina as well, building a solid snowpack in Madesimo and Livigno.
Snow also reached the northeastern mountains, albeit with lighter intensity: snow fell across Trentino, Veneto, and Friuli with more modest accumulations of 10 to 20 cm in the Dolomites, where the storm will linger until Monday morning.
More snow on the way in the Alps
Once this storm passes, sunshine will return to the Alps—but only briefly…
Starting Tuesday, February 9, unsettled weather returns as a new storm system brings more snow to resorts across the Alpine arc.
The snow line will range between 800 and 1,200 meters, and accumulations could be substantial in several resorts in the Northwestern and Central Alps.
Snow will continue to fall over the following days as well, with varying accumulations and snow levels depending on the sector.
This will be a pivotal week for Alpine ski resorts, which can finally stock up on fresh snow and get their slopes into top condition—now there are no more excuses, it is time to get back on the pistes!
