Buzz about the weather forecast for the 2014/2015 winter started a while ago, but we decided to write an article about it only now. Following one of the mildest/coolest summers in recent years, the discussion over “what kind of winter awaits us” began very early, with plenty of theories on weather forums but very few authoritative posts on the subject.
Given that making such long-range forecasts is practically impossible, this year even some US websites have refrained from publishing their winter projections, postponing everything until November, while other Italian websites have not weighed in on the matter. It is easier to find info on early trends for the United States, whereas for Europe there are only posts by bloggers of questionable expertise.
Freezing Winter, Polar Winter… is that really the case?
Perhaps because the war in Ukraine sparked fears of spending the winter without Russian gas and therefore “without heating”, or perhaps because many articles on the web simply echo one another, the fact remains that in recent weeks numerous articles have been published about the likely arrival of a bitterly cold winter with temperatures of -20 degrees and widespread snowfalls reaching the plains and central Italian cities (such as the classic snowfall in Rome).
These articles often come with no supporting explanation, while others back up their claims with studies on global warming and the inevitable arrival of increasingly hot summers and increasingly cold winters.
In our view, however, such predictions carry little weight, and so far real experts have steered clear of making projections for the upcoming winter season.
So what kind of winter awaits us?
It is too early to tell; slightly more reliable outlooks may emerge starting in mid-November. Even so, for us snow and ski lovers there is already no shortage of opportunities to hit the slopes right now: several glaciers are already open and others will open very soon—we just have to wait for the first real snowfall of the season.
