Autumn has just begun, yet the warm weather already seems to be over for the Italian mountains, especially for the glaciers.
After the snowfalls of the past few days, Stelvio seems ready to leave behind the hot days that stifled it this summer and saw its slopes shorten meter by meter due to melting snow.
Now that the recent snowfalls have brought a fresh layer of snow to the slopes, the glacier is “breathing” again, and the low temperatures are allowing the snow layers to consolidate and last longer.
Nor does this cold snap appear to be merely passing through: since the first snowfall, the snow on the glacier has shown no significant retreat and is in fact already starting to accumulate, while nighttime temperatures drop several degrees below freezing.
So snow is finally accumulating on the glacier again, and hopes are high for a generous autumn in terms of snowfall, given that autumn snowfalls are even more important than spring ones.
Below is the webcam capture looking toward Punta degli Spiriti; as you can see, snow is accumulating once again.
