President Conci: positive balance on a technical and organizational level – Sport conquers Campiglio: thousands on the Canalone Miramonti – The only sad note was the passing of the valuable collaborator Bertocci.
The curtain on the Canalone Miramonti in Madonna di Campiglio remains open; the 3Tre slope used by the fast World Cup athletes is now a “land of conquest” for the many tourists flocking to the famous Trentino resort.
Meanwhile, the spotlight on the event has gone out and it is time for the first assessments and analyses. The joy of the success of the 3Tre remains, just as a veil of sadness remains among the organizers for the loss of Lanfranco Bertocci, a valuable collaborator who suffered a fatal medical emergency slopeside.
Returning after a seven-year absence from the World Cup was not easy, both from a logistical-organizational point of view and from a technical point of view. Times evolve, and keeping the team “in training” with European Cup races paid off. A lot of hard work was done and the results were there, extremely positive, in some ways even beyond all expectations.
The response came from the village and the locals of Campiglio, who patiently experienced the preparation phase and enthusiastically welcomed athletes and fans. A first sign of this was seen at the bib draw on the eve of the race: huge crowds, including over a thousand very young people, fans, onlookers, and tourists packing Piazza Sissi, the heart of Campiglio, to cheer the athletes who the next day competed between the gates of the 3Tre. A further response from the crowd came on the evening of the race: difficult to estimate with certainty, but certainly over 10,000 people showed up along the Canalone Miramonti, in a blaze of flags and stadium-like cheering.
From a technical standpoint as well, hats off to Italy; these were the words of Gunter Hujara, Men’s Alpine Ski World Cup race director: ”Campiglio is permanently back on the calendar and will always be a night race. It was a great show, on a perfect slope. Well done. Congratulations to everyone.”
The experience of the slope crew proved fundamental, while the snow and cold that enveloped Val Rendena in the days leading up to the race were the icing on the cake, contributing to a plan that turned out to be perfect. The organizational machine ran without a hitch. The headquarters at PalaCampiglio served as the lungs that oxygenated the media (200 journalists arrived from all over the world), coordinated attendance, and hosted FIS and FISI meetings. In short, one could say that Italy knows how to get things done.
The Tourist Board (ApT), the Lift Company (Società Funivie), the Municipality of Pinzolo, and that of Ragoli all contributed with enthusiasm. Naturally, the strongest thanks go to the ApT and the Lift Company: snowmaking and continuous assistance to the men working on slope preparation determined the success, just as the staff and structure of the ApT dedicated heart and soul to the organization, especially through Loredana Bonazza and Matteo Bonapace, who coordinated the general secretariat. But the true heart and soul of the 3Tre were them: the 200 volunteers committed on all fronts.
Before getting into the heart of the review, President Lorenzo Conci wanted to say a few more words in memory of Bertocci: “it was a shock for all of us, a very delicate, unthinkable situation …that leaves a deep sadness upon you.”
“As for the technical assessment – continues Lorenzo Conci – the preparation of the slope, thanks to Adriano Alimonta and his men, was perfect. The Canalone Miramonti once again proved to be one of the most beautiful slopes in the world, the technical equipment was adequate, in short everything went smoothly”.
Obviously there are also other aspects of the immediate assessment that are positive: “the crowd turnout – again in the words of Lorenzo Conci – was a pleasant surprise. We all dreamed of a good response, but no one dared imagine such a result. Tickets sold out, and honestly in this area there were a few small issues. Queues at the entrances, and a bit of confusion. The turnout, stronger than expected, caught us unprepared and we must improve on this. But being able to work on this aspect brings great joy. Even the World Cup director, Hujara, was pleasantly surprised. In every sector there are small details we will work on, of course, but essentially we won the difficult challenge of returning after 7 years and not proving inferior to others. We want to thank everyone who came because only thanks to their presence was the 3Tre a success.”
