This icy early-winter spell will produce its first effects as early as Monday, December 3, with plummeting temperatures both in the mountains and in the plains: widespread frost across all northern cities and intense cold in central Italy as well. Temperatures could drop below -10 degrees already at 1000 meters in altitude, recording the first sub-zero extremes in the resorts of Asiago Marcesina and Livigno.
Snow will also return—though in truth it has never really stopped falling, as cloud bands have brought the white lady to Veneto and Trentino even in recent hours. For Tuesday, snowfalls are forecast across almost the entire north; although they will mostly be light precipitation, they will also affect hilly altitudes, while the Apennines in particular will benefit from new snowfalls with the snow line dropping down to 1000m.
Experts predict that this cold air flow could persist for at least a week, bringing the whole of Italy into what has already been dubbed the “European freezer”—a great prospect for ski areas, which thanks to the low temperatures will be able to run their artificial snowmaking systems to prepare the slopes and stock up on snow for the winter. Ski resorts have already had their snow cannons running for several days, and temperatures over the coming week are expected to allow 24-hour snowmaking.
The weather situation is evolving, so we recommend staying updated by checking the live webcams and the snow report.
