The Sirocco Wind Brings Snow to the High Mountains

Paradiso Adamello Bleis

paradiso-adamello-bleisOnce again, it is the high mountains that have been hit by the new snowstorm that brought more fresh snow this weekend. The clouds that moved in over our Alps on Friday brought heavy snowfalls above 2,000/2,500 meters, blanketing the glaciers and highest peaks in white.
Unlike the early taste of winter that also treated mid-altitude ski resorts a few weeks ago, this weekend the snow only reached ski resorts above 2,000 meters, leaving around 20 cm of fresh snow on the ground in Cervinia and in the Via Lattea ski area, snow on the Adamello and Passo Stelvio (closed for the end of the season) with accumulations of around 20/30 cm, and a light dusting of snow in Lombardy with 5 cm of fresh snow in the village of Livigno.
Snow also fell in the northeast, though at higher elevations than in the northwestern sectors. Snow reached the peaks across all of Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto above 2,500 meters above sea level. Particularly noteworthy was the snowfall that hit the Faloria Ski Area in Cortina d’Ampezzo, which is now preparing to open its ski lifts for next weekend.

In the coming hours, this Sirocco weather system will leave the Alps without bringing significant temperature changes. To see “General Winter” in action, we will have to wait a few more weeks…
