The wait is over, SNOW on the way for the Alps and Apennines

Abundant snow

abundant snowThe last two weeks have been fairly difficult for the ski resorts that were ready to open their doors and kick off the new winter season. The lack of precipitation and above-average temperatures threw a wrench in the works for lift operators, who in many cases were only able to keep their promises thanks to a massive snowmaking effort.
Such is the case at Plan de Corones, which opened its ski lifts on Saturday the 24th relying mostly on artificial snow “produced in industrial quantities” thanks to the numerous snow cannons covering 100% of the skiable domain.
However, it looks like this trend is set to come to an end next week with falling temperatures and SNOW on the way.

By Tuesday/Wednesday, a substantial weather system is set to reach the Italian peninsula, bringing rain to the plains and snow to the mountains; this new front will sweep across all of Italy from north to south—and from west to east—with significant precipitation across the Alps and Apennines and the snow line dropping even below 1,000 meters, especially during the final phase of the storm.

The first phase, expected for Tuesday–Wednesday, will feature heavy snowfall with the snow line estimated around 2,000 meters, gradually dropping as the hours go by until on Thursday it could reach—or even fall below—1,000 meters, bringing snow to all ski resorts across the Alps.
A similar situation is expected for the Apennines, especially in the northernmost sectors, which will first see heavy rain followed by a drop in temperatures and the return of snow.

It is hard to say whether this will be the decisive snowfall that removes all doubt regarding the lift openings scheduled for December 1, but it remains a great sign for those who, like us, are hoping for the arrival of real winter.
