30 cm of fresh snow: Cervinia gets ready for the Easter holiday weekend

Easter is shaping up to be a truly lucky one for the many enthusiasts heading this holiday to the Matterhorn ski area, where all the links between Cervinia, Valtournenche and Zermatt (Switzerland) are open. Overnight between 15 cm of snow fell in Cervinia village and 30 cm at altitude, so the 350 kilometres of slopes greet skiers this Easter weekend looking their “powdered” best (pun very much intended!), with powder snow up high and packed snow lower down. Here is the current snow situation across the whole ski area: it ranges from 260 cm at Plateau Rosà (3,500 m) to 130 cm at Cime Bianche Laghi (2,800 m) and from 90 cm at Plan Maison (2,500 m) to 35 cm in Cervinia village (2,050 m), where skiing back down is guaranteed from the Ventina and the Cretaz slopes. In Valtournenche the snow cover ranges from a maximum of 140 cm to a minimum of 30 cm across the entire ski area.

And to celebrate an Easter of “beautiful snow”, two major sporting events are scheduled for Saturday, April 7. Things kick off in the morning (or rather, late morning) at Cervinia’s IndianPark (Fornet chairlift area, at Plan Maison) with the “Roxy Chicks Games Special Edition”, reserved for the girls who took part in the “Roxy Chicks Games 2012”, and continue in the evening (8:50 p.m.) with the traditional parallel slalom featuring the instructors of the Cervinia and Zermatt ski schools in a thrilling challenge on the Cretaz slope (in the village), floodlit for the occasion.

The lifts in the Breuil basin are scheduled to close on May 6; the Cervinia–Plateau Rosà line will then reopen on the weekend of May 19 and 20 for the finish of the Cherasco–Cervinia stage of the Giro d’Italia (May 19). Conditions permitting, on both days it will be possible to ski the upper part of the “Ventina” run, returning to Cime Bianche Laghi.
