A new weather front is expected tomorrow, which should bring snow to the Alps above 1,200 m and to the Apennines above 1,600 m.
This front will also be short-lived and will pass over our mountains, bringing precipitation for only part of the day on Monday. Experts are talking about light accumulations, though heavier towards the Pre-Alps. In the Dolomites 5-10 cm of snow is forecast, while on the Pre-Alps and the hills close to the plains the snow will fall more heavily.
The snow level is forecast at around 1,000 m, but during the day it could rise to as high as 1,500 m.
There is great anticipation in the ski areas where the snow has not yet arrived and only a few slopes are open. The hope is that tomorrow’s snowfall will allow new runs to open and create a base on which artificial snow can be made.

a snowfall like this wouldn't be bad!
A white Christmas is likely
While for now we have to make do with passing cloudy fronts, it seems that after mid-December the situation could get moving, bringing snowfall and normal temperatures.
The temperature inversion (colder on the plains than in the mountains) has caused quite a few problems, and a drop in temperatures could benefit mountain resorts. Nothing is certain yet, but it seems likely that some major weather fronts could reach the Alps before Christmas and bring snow even where not a single flake has fallen so far.
If this scenario holds true, we could say the start of the season has been saved, and we could enjoy a white Christmas on the snow!
