The snow report speaks for itself, and the live webcams from the slopes certainly confirm it: there are a full 5 meters of snow on the Presena Glacier.
It is neither an all-time record nor an unusual figure for one of Italy’s main ski glaciers, yet it is a remarkable result considering that until a month ago an early summer seemed inevitable…
After a winter without major snowfalls, there were fears of another disastrous season for the Adamello glacier. Winter’s late parting shot starting on April 20 completely turned the situation around, dumping snow all the way down to Passo del Tonale and replenishing the Presena with precious fresh snow.
Lifts open until May 19
On the Presena Glacier, the ski lifts are still open and the season continues without interruption: you will be able to ski until May 19.
Sunday, May 19, will be the final day to have fun on the snows of the Ponte di Legno – Tonale ski area, and more specifically on the slopes of the glacier towering above it.
As mentioned, snow conditions are exceptional, and no weather forecast will be able to alter the snowpack before the closing weekend.
The glacier—where people once skied even in July—now closes early to let its snowpack rest beneath protective geotextile sheets; even so, we still have two full weeks of skiing ahead of us.
For more info on snow conditions, and to see the effect of those 5 meters of snow with your own eyes, you can check the live Presena webcams
