Ski lift closings

50 cm of fresh snow but no extension to the lift closing dates

Snow was the star of the show yesterday. The entire Alps, from east to west, were hit by a weather front that brought snow down to 1,000 m, with heavy snowfall above all in the central-northern and north-eastern areas.

Over 50 centimeters of snow fell above 2,000 m and around 30 at 1,500 m. The snow also covered the (by now green) meadows of the villages at 1,000 meters (and even lower), putting a stop to the start of spring that had awakened the mountain flora and fauna. A return to winter that exceeded the expectations of the weather experts: such heavy and widespread snowfall had not been forecast.

The ski slopes were sparkling again in this morning’s sunlight, with a white awakening for all the ski resorts. The generous accumulations have freshened up the slopes, giving the landscape a new look. However, although the snowfall was heavy, no extensions are in sight and the ski lifts will close on the dates already announced.
This weekend – April 14/15 – several ski lifts are due to close, including: Madonna di Campiglio, Val Gardena/Alpe di Siusi, Arabba Marmolada, Val di Fassa, Sesto, Val di Fiemme, Valle Isarco, Skiarena Klausberg, Madesimo, Racines Giovo and Pila.

Although all the resorts listed have benefited from the “out-of-season snowfall”, none of them has extended its lift closing date. So Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th will be the last days of skiing at these ski resorts; from next week it will only be possible to keep skiing at high-altitude resorts and on the glaciers.
