A new ski area in the Orobie Park, and controversy begins

A ski area with 30 kilometers of slopes across 13 square kilometers of territory and an expansion of 6 million square meters of skiable areas: this is what is outlined in the project featuring the localities of Avert, Vodala and Foppane in Gromo, Lizzola in Valbondione, Rigada in Oltressenda Alta, Val Conchetta in Colere and Teveno in Vilminore, located between Alta Valle Seriana and Valle di Scalve.

A project that would require an investment of around 60 million euros in an area bringing together seven municipalities and a park, the Orobie Park, designated as a special protection zone.

Certainly a development as massive as it is delicate, since agreement must be found not only among residents, but also on environmental impact issues.

Already dubbed “The Ski Paradise” by the provincial administration and mayors, the project does not seem to win everyone over.

First and foremost Legambiente, which warns of the destruction of the area’s wildlife heritage and also predicts a likely failure of the system due to global warming, which would make it difficult if not impossible to keep the ski lifts running at full efficiency.

On the other hand, supporters of the “ski paradise” see it as a necessity and the only way to relaunch tourism in the valleys.

Discussions that are certainly nothing new and typical whenever mountain development is proposed, yet every area has its own characteristics and in any case one certainly cannot proceed blindfolded, in either direction.
