More Snow, then the BIG FREEZE hits the Alps and Apennines

This week marked a weather turning point for Italian ski resorts. The “drought” is over and snow has once again made its appearance on our mountains, including the Apennines. Not a huge amount of snow has fallen, except in Cervinia where 70 cm have been recorded in the village, but it has at least transformed the landscape from 1,300 m upwards.
The first snowflakes were also seen at 1,000 m, and thanks to snowfalls of 10-20 cm many ski areas were able to cut the ribbon and kick off the new ski season, albeit very late.

Many people argued that if snow-bearing weather systems reached the Alps, they would bring about a turnaround in the weather, and it seems that this is exactly what is happening.
That’s right: for tomorrow, Friday, December 16, new snow is expected, this time from 800 m, but what matters most is the arrival of the cold, the real cold!
From Saturday, night-time temperatures should already reach -10 degrees in almost all resorts above 1,000 m, and over the following days temperatures will stay below zero even in the middle of the day. Real winter temperatures that give all snow lovers good reason to hope. No more temperature inversion, no more mild temperatures, and at last the arrival of a real Christmas climate (snow and cold).

Snowfall on Friday, December 16

Tomorrow should see the start of new snowfall on the Alps. This new precipitation will benefit right away from the drop in temperature, with the chance of seeing snowflakes even above 800 m.
It is a passing disturbance that will only affect the first part of the day, and skies will already clear again by the evening. During the night between Friday and Saturday, widespread frost is expected across all mountain areas.

Snow and cold arrive on the Apennines too

If the Alps were struggling until now, the Apennines no longer knew “which saint to pray to”. However, Italy’s oldest mountains will also be able to enjoy this new influx of cold air and the resulting drop in temperature.
Here too, snowfall is possible tomorrow in some ski resorts (above 1,300 m), for example Abetone. Over the following days the snow could also make an appearance at lower altitudes.
