The winter season is getting closer every day. Proof of this is the snowfall that has already hit the Alps, covering them with a soft white blanket, as if it were already winter. Temperatures have also dropped drastically, and frosts in the mountains are now an everyday occurrence.
They have noticed it above all in the largest ski area in the world, Dolomiti Superski, the mega ski area of the Dolomites that offers no fewer than 1,200 km of ski slopes, half of which are linked so you can ski from one to the next without taking your skis off.
Dolomiti Superski is a must-visit destination for skiers and snowboarders from all over the world; it’s impossible not to carve through the snow of the Dolomites in winter, with not only slopes that are always in excellent condition but also landscapes that are a World Heritage Site, and that’s no joke.
One of the first resorts to get to work preparing its runs for the ski season is Val Gardena, which, beating everyone to it, has already launched its snowmaking plan, needed to build the base of the slopes that will host thousands of snow lovers.
But Val Gardena is not the only one thinking about the new winter season: in fact, the various resorts have already sat down at the table and drawn up the calendar of ski lift openings for the 2011/2012 season. Here they are:
| Season opening | |
|---|---|
| Cortina d’Ampezzo | 26/11/2011 |
| Plan de Corones | 26/11/2011 |
| Alta Badia | 26/11/2011 |
| Val Gardena/Alpe di Siusi | 03/12/2011 |
| Val di Fassa/Carezza | 26/11/2011 |
| Arabba /Marmolada | 02/12/2011 |
| Sesto – Alta Pusteria | 26/11/2011 |
| Val di Fiemme/Obereggen | 26/11/2011 |
| S.Martino di Castrozza/Passo Rolle | 26/11/2011 |
| Valle Isarco | 04/12/2010 |
| Trevalli-Moena/S.Pellegrino/Falcade | 03/12/2011 |
| Civetta | 26/11/2011 |
What can be gathered from the official Dolomiti Superski calendar is that there will be no early openings; what stands out is the uniformity in the choice of opening dates.
Civetta, San Martino di Castrozza, Obereggen, Sesto, Val di Fassa, Plan de Corones and Cortina d’Ampezzo will open their doors on November 26, 2011, an opening “with a bang” that suggests a “non-aggression pact” aimed at putting major ski areas capable of tempting skiers with early openings on an equal footing.
Out of step with the rest are Arabba, Trevalli, Val Gardena and Valle Isarco (the last to open its lifts), which will start the season on the first weekend of December, just in time for the Immaculate Conception long weekend. A choice probably due to snow cover issues but also to quality, especially in the case of Val Gardena, a ski resort that wants to guarantee the best snow conditions to the skiers who choose it.
The chosen dates clash with the race for early openings that many ski areas have been running for years now as soon as the first snow arrives; Dolomiti Superski did not take up the challenge, preferring to take a safer path and thus guarantee skiers full-winter snow conditions.
