50 cm of snow: that is how much snow has fallen in recent hours on the Stubai Glacier. One of the largest glaciers in the Alps and a benchmark for skiing in Austria has thus been able to bid farewell to the hot summer and welcome autumn—or rather, winter.
This first real autumn storm (at high altitude it is already autumn) has blanketed the entire Alps in white, bringing a good layer of snow to Livigno as well. Up to 30 cm of snow fell in the Dolomites, completely transforming the landscape above 3,000 meters.
However, nobody expected that the 50 cm of fresh snow that fell in Austria would allow Stubai to open its lifts on September 13!!!
An early lift opening that caught everyone by surprise, but will delight all of us skiers and snowboarders suffering from snow withdrawal.
Here are the details on the opening for Friday, September 13:
- 3S Eisgratbahn I and II cableway
- EUB Gamsgarten II gondola lift as a connection
- 8-seater chairlift as a connection to Daunferner and back (no pedestrians)
- Daunferner II ski lift
Open Slopes:
- Slope No. 7
- Slope No. 9
Note: unlike other ski areas, at Stubai the slopes will be open to everyone and not just to ski clubs.
OPENING HOURS:
First ascent for guests from the valley station at 8:00 a.m. and last descent to the valley from the Eisgrat & Gamsgarten mountain stations at 4:15 p.m.
The Eisgrat Restaurant will be open.
Last to close, first to open
Stubai seems to have achieved great results following the snow farming measures implemented in recent years. The extensive use of geotextile sheets and snow-stockpiling operations with snowcats appear to have paid off, even though the summer managed to melt away a full 6 meters of snow.
Stubai seems determined to achieve the goal of being one of the last glaciers to close (with lifts open until June 10) and one of the very first to reopen.
Where to Stay
The Stubai Glacier is located at the head of the vast valley that bears its name. The Stubai Valley stretches directly west of Innsbruck. Here you will find many villages offering accommodation at very affordable prices.

Given its proximity, many skiers choose to stay in Innsbruck. The Austrian city is not far from the ski area, is well connected to Stubai, and is an excellent choice for those looking to combine skiing with traditional sightseeing in Austria.
