Heavy snowfall and intense frost about to hit Italy

Heavy snowfall

The “days of the blackbird”, traditionally the coldest of the year, are living up to their reputation: the week ahead will certainly be one of the coldest of the whole winter. That is what the weather forecasts say, predicting a sharp drop in temperature across the whole country, with temperatures plummeting both in the mountains and on the plains, from north to south.
Along with the frost, snow will arrive too, with snowfall down to the plains in the north. The first snowfalls had already made their way in over the weekend, whitening the mountains of the Aosta Valley, Piedmont and Lombardy. In some resorts it has never stopped snowing: just think of Prato Nevoso, where it has been snowing non-stop since Saturday and 50 cm of fresh snow has now been reached (after almost 2 months of “drought”)
This time the snow should also reach the north-eastern side of the Alps and the Po Valley, with flakes on the Dolomites too. However, the heaviest snowfall will hit the mountains of the north-west, with the Aosta Valley once again the big star of this winter.
After the snow comes the frost, with truly polar temperatures forecast. The forecasts speak of -20 degrees at just 1,000 meters and -10 on the plains.

The snowfall will affect not only the Alps but also the Apennines. After passing over the Alps and the Po Valley, the weather system will move towards the Apennines, dumping snow on the mountains. From the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines to Abruzzo the snow could be more than 30 cm deep, with snowfall down to the plains (in Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, and perhaps a few snowflakes in Rome).
