From 30° a few days ago to snow! The mountains are unpredictable and weather conditions can change within a few days, going from a scorching summer to early-winter temperatures.
Yesterday, the disturbance coming from the north brought snow above 2,200 metres in the Aosta Valley and a light dusting on the Belluno Dolomites as well.
A white afternoon swept over Cervinia and the Monterosa, once again whitening the ski slopes, which in winter turn into trails for hikers and bikers. The snow whitened the ground from as low as 2,000 metres, but significant accumulations only occurred above 2,500 metres, with a few centimetres of snow.
Above 3,000 m the snow reached as much as 10 cm, halting/slowing the melting of the glaciers, which have taken a heavy blow in recent weeks because of the scorching temperatures.
The snow did not only whiten the mountains of the Aosta Valley and upper Piedmont, but also made an appearance on the peaks of the Dolomites. Snow fell on the Cristallo in Cortina, on the Sella group in Val Gardena and on the main peaks of South Tyrol.
The disturbance has passed and temperatures should return to normal, although more precipitation is expected in the coming days. However, weather experts rule out further snowfall at low altitudes, although snow could still make an appearance on the glaciers.
This out-of-season snowfall is not an isolated case: in fact, in 2009 too snow made its appearance at 2,100 m, also covering Sella Nevea and Plan de Corones.
