After a taste of spring with pleasant temperatures across Italy, snow is returning to the Italian mountains with a weekend marked by wintry temperatures and heavy snowfalls at medium altitudes. General Winter seemed ready to retreat after a long campaign that delivered one of the longest ski seasons since the record winter of 2008/2009, but weather forecasts for the coming days are set to overturn the spring scenario many had been hoping for.
In the early hours of Friday, April 19, the storm system will reach the western sector of the Italian Alps, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and the first snowflakes; during the day temperatures will rise slightly and the snow line will settle around 1,200 meters across Aosta Valley, Piedmont, and Liguria, with snow expected in many ski areas that are still open, such as Cervinia, Prato Nevoso, Monterosa (freeride only), San Domenico, and others…
The western regions will not be the only ones hit by this new wintry wave: already on Friday the weather system will sweep across the entire Alpine arc all the way to the far northeast, while on Saturday snowfalls will persist in the Alps and the first snowflakes will reach the Apennines, blanketing the only resort in central Italy still continuing its ski season, Campo Imperatore.
While in the northeast snowfalls will affect only medium-high altitudes (above 1,500 m, and in some cases only above 2,000 m), in the northwestern and central Alps snow will reach resorts at 1,200–1,300 meters as well, whitening ski areas that closed a few weeks ago.
Heavy snowfalls are forecast especially on Saturday and Sunday, when more than 50 cm of fresh snow could fall across most mountain areas above 2,000/2,200 meters of altitude, with snow continuing to fall until late on Monday, April 22.
This snowfall will give a further boost to the ski season in the resorts that have postponed their lift closures and will offer skiing right through May 1. From the Matterhorn to the Dolomites, there is no shortage of snow—especially at high altitude.
