A white awakening for the Alps this morning: snow made its comeback above 1,600 metres from Trentino to Friuli. An unexpected snowfall at very low altitudes given the date (May 16) changed the face of the mountains of the north-east, bringing snow above 1,600 m with substantial accumulations above 2,000/2,500 m. The slopes of Cortina turned white from Socrepes upwards, there was snow in Asiago on Monte Verena and snow in nearby Folgaria from Fondo Piccolo upwards. The snow also whitened the valleys of Trentino such as the Val di Fiemme, snow at the foot of the Dolomites with a splendid winter landscape in Ortisei and Selva di Val Gardena, and snow on Madonna di Campiglio.
The snow reached some of the mountains of Lombardy, leaving however only a light dusting above 2,000 m: a wintry awakening only for Livigno.
It’s a completely different story in Friuli, where last night’s weather front dumped a lot of snow, especially at altitude; at the moment the webcams are still covered in snow, but you can easily tell that it snowed from Piancavallo to Tarvisio, not to mention the all-too-predictable resort of Sella Nevea.
A lovely out-of-season gift that reminds us that in the mountains anything is possible, even snow in summer!
