Snowing across the entire Alps, even below 1,000 m in altitude

Late October snowfall

late october snowfallA white awakening in the Alps on this last Sunday of October. The cold front arrived overnight, sending temperatures plummeting and bringing the snow line sharply down. Very heavy snowfalls hit the glaciers overnight, with Passo Stelvio buried in snow this morning, and the same goes for Val Senales, Solda, and Adamello. In the morning, snow also began falling at lower elevations, with the snow line still dropping.
Heavy snowfalls have been recorded in Piedmont in the Cuneo area and across all the Olympic mountains (Bardonecchia, Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx), where it continues to snow. Abundant snow is also falling across the entire western sector, with the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa valleys experiencing heavy (almost winter-like) snowfall and a snow line at 1,000 m (and dropping).

Not just the Aosta Valley and Piedmont: right now it is snowing across the entire Alpine arc, with snowfalls in Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto extending into the Prealpine sectors as well. Even resorts where snow usually makes its first appearance only in December have been blanketed in white in October, with notable snowfalls in Cavalese (Val di Fiemme) and on the Asiago Plateau down to 1,000 m. Snow is also falling in Friuli, with the mountains of Tarvisio under heavy snowfall.

Conditions are evolving hour by hour with the snow line dropping rapidly; weather experts forecast possible snowfalls down to 500 m in the mountains of Piedmont and above 900 m across the entire Alpine arc.
