Over this Palm Sunday weekend as well, the pattern that has dominated the Italian mountains for weeks will return, with sub-zero temperatures and snow above 1,000 meters from east to west.
This new weather system will hit Italy on the afternoon of Saturday, March 23, bringing the first snowflakes to the northwestern mountains with overnight snowfall in both Aosta Valley and Piedmont. Snow will reach the rest of the Alps on Sunday, March 24, peaking overnight between Sunday and Monday, March 25, when snow could drop to hilly elevations around 500 meters above sea level.
Snow will blanket the entire Alpine arc especially on Sunday starting from 1,000 meters, with possible snowfall at even lower altitudes in several areas. The freezing air sweeping down from northern Europe could bring snow down to the hills and perhaps even the plains in parts of Emilia.
The snowfall will taper off on Monday evening, though flurries could continue into Tuesday across the mountains of Trentino Alto Adige, upper Veneto, and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
This snowy weather system will further contribute to an Easter filled with skiing and snowboarding, with slopes in excellent condition even at medium-low elevations for the final major snow holiday of the 2012/2013 season.
