Officially summer is not over yet, but in truth in this 2014—after below-average temperatures, heavy rains, and out-of-season snowfalls—we can say it never really arrived.
With an increasingly autumnal climate, the ski season is approaching; in fact, many resorts have already started preparing for the upcoming winter on the snow.
Welcoming the first skiers are the glaciers, which thanks to favorable conditions are bringing forward their lift openings.
The first ski destination to announce an early opening was Val Senales, with the Alto Adige glacier ready to host skiers and snowboarders starting September 20.

Beating everyone to the punch is the Austrian ski area of Stubai, whose glacier—well preserved by below-average temperatures and snowfalls extending into July and August—made it possible to groom the runs and reopen its doors as early as September 13, 2014.

So everyone onto the slopes on the snow of the 2 glaciers, Eisjochferner and Windachferner, with two perfectly groomed runs—no. 1 at Schaufelschuss and no. 6 at Windachferner—served by 5 ski lifts: the Eisgrat I–II and Schaufeljochbahn cable cars, and the Eisjoch II and Windach ski lifts.

The ski resort will be open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Stubai will very likely not be the only ski center to bring forward its lift opening, and other major ski destinations could join the list in the coming days.
