snow weather

Up to 1 meter of snow in the Alps, snowfall also expected at 1,100m overnight

Snowfall in the Alps

Alpine snowfall
The weather system “Medusa” arrived in the early hours of yesterday afternoon and is sweeping across the entire Alps with heavy snowfall especially at high altitude. Its impact on the western sector made the ski resorts of Aosta Valley and Piedmont the stars of this latest November snowfall: by yesterday evening alone, a full 40cm of fresh snow had already fallen on the slopes of Cervinia, while Bardonecchia was wrapped in a blizzard.
Overnight, snowfall continued relentlessly alongside a rapid drop in the snow line, which fell below 1,500 meters in the morning, albeit only for a few hours. This morning, high-mountain resorts woke up to an extraordinary winter landscape, with snow across the entire Alpine arc from west to east and several dozen centimeters of fresh snow. The weather system gave no respite today either, except for a few local clear spells, and throughout this evening, all night long, and tomorrow morning, snow is forecast with the snow line dropping down to 1,100–1,200 meters.

Snow Report

Aosta Valley and Piedmont are the top regions in terms of snowfall totals:
With 60cm in the village of Cervinia and nearly 1 meter of snow at high altitude, it is the ski area hardest hit by this new snowfall, though plenty of snow has also fallen in Piedmont on the slopes of the “Via Lattea”; from Bardonecchia to Sestriere it has been snowing non-stop since yesterday afternoon, and here weather experts forecast up to 1 meter of snow in the coming hours!
Snow in Lombardy with around 20cm on the high-altitude slopes of Santa Caterina Valfurva, snow is also falling in Alto Adige with about 10cm on Plan de Corones, and snow in Trentino even at 1,600m with the center of Madonna di Campiglio covered in snow.
Snow in Veneto too, where Cortina d’Ampezzo gets its revenge and sees Faloria take center stage with 20cm of fresh snow and a few snowflakes that also whitened the rooftops of downtown Cortina.

Weather outlook for the coming hours

Snowfall is set to continue over the coming hours as well, and the first clear spells will only arrive tomorrow. Overnight, precipitation is expected to intensify at high altitude alongside a drop in temperatures that should bring the snow line down to 1,100–1,200 meters.
This weather system will leave the Alps tomorrow, while new snowfall is on the way for the weekend followed by falling temperatures and very sharp frosts in the mountains… but we will tell you more about that in the coming days.
