The countdown is almost over for the second Vintage Skiers’ Gathering (Raduno Sciatori d’Epoca) and the Historic Slalom – 1st Valerio Fincati Trophy.
The initiative grew out of a Facebook group dedicated to the world of vintage skiing; founded and run by Michele Battaglin, the Sciatori d’Epoca group has grown day by day and now boasts over 7,000 members.
From a Facebook group, it expanded into a website created in collaboration with us at Mondoneve.it: today sciatoridepoca.it is one of the largest Italian archives dedicated to the history of skiing—a true encyclopedia featuring online magazines, articles, in-depth features, and vintage photos.
Last year, the Verena Ski Area hosted the first edition of the Historic Slalom, an amateur ski race open exclusively to traditional long, straight skis.
Scores of enthusiasts—along with famous faces from the world of skiing such as champions Piero Gros, Pietro Albertelli, and Lorena Frigo—raced down the Civello slope in the Asiago ski area…
The first edition wrapped up with big smiles, new friendships, and above all a day celebrating a shared passion for skiing and its history.
Vintage Skiers’ Gathering – 2016 Edition
Following the resounding success of the inaugural event, a second edition was a must. On April 3, 2016, the Verena Ski Area, in collaboration with the Sciatori d’Epoca group and Mondoneve.it, will host the second gathering and Historic Slalom awarding the first Valerio Fincati Trophy.
There will be 2 race categories:
- Antique category: wooden skis (men/women)
- Vintage category: straight metal or fiberglass/plastic skis (men/women/children)
Program
– 7:30 a.m. Race office opens; race numbers and bibs handed out by 9:00 a.m.
– 9:30 a.m. Race starts, with live commentary by legendary ski champions of the past
– from 11:00 a.m. Vintage après-ski at the bottom of the slope with a DJ and 1970s-themed entertainment
– 1:00 p.m. Lunch at Rifugio Verenetta (reservation required)
– 3:00 p.m. Awards ceremony, charity raffle draw, and 1970s music and dancing in the Rifugio tavern

This 2016 edition will welcome numerous athletes, journalists, and authors who shaped the history of skiing; here are some of the names already confirmed:

Race registration costs €40 and includes a daily skipass, a Vintage Skiers souvenir gift, and lunch at Rifugio Verenetta.

Charity raffle
During the Historic Slalom, a raffle will be held featuring numerous vintage items and other great prizes, with all proceeds donated directly to charity.
