Michele Festini and his staff have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to organize the race in the best possible way, commemorating the terrible battles fought on the Pitturina during the First World War. The course, after the snowfalls of the past few weeks, is ready and secured.
All competitors will receive as an event gift a military backpack that belonged to the Czechoslovak army containing “Zero-Mile” local products.
In addition, a notepad (an evolution of the “La Pitturina” diary created last year) will be distributed; besides the possibility of taking notes, it will contain all the information relating to the race, as well as historical notes linking our mountains with the sadly famous events of the Great War.
On Sunday morning, in conjunction with the Pitturina race, the “Io c’ero a Km Zero” gathering will set off. A “human transhumance” to be carried out by any means—skis, snowshoes, or simply on foot—which on the day of the Pitturina Ski Race moves towards Casera Melin, at the foot of the final demanding descent that brings the athletes from the Cima Vallona King of the Mountains prize towards the finish line. Here there will be a celebration made up of traditions, music, folklore, ancient customs, and flavours. A celebration of simple, everyday people, of the fans who will come to admire the competing athletes, and of mountain lovers, valley residents, and volunteers. A unique opportunity to fully experience the Pitturina and its unspoiled places, to spend a few hours away from commitments, work, and city stress, and to be able to say: “I was there at KmZero too”.
At Casera Melin on March 1, 2015, there will be hot drinks, the warmth of a bonfire, the scents of the winter woods, and the lightheartedness of folk music. Thanks to partner Montura, a splendid gift will remind you forever of the experience.
The La Pitturina weekend will begin on Friday, January 27 in the evening with an exhibition Vertical Race, starting from the hamlet of San Nicolò to arrive at the new Monte Zovo mountain hut.
Included in the Pitturina program are a concert by the Living Dolls supporting the Vertical Race, and the Winter Comelian Music Tour which will take place in the venues of Val Comelico on Saturday afternoon.
As for the events closely linked to the Great War, in collaboration with the 3 Cime Alpine Guides, a series of ski mountaineering and snowshoeing outings have been included in the program to retrace the places that were the scene of fierce battles.
Following the events of January 17 and February 7, on February 21 snowshoes will be used to climb up to Collesei. Finally, on March 14 this interesting initiative will conclude by climbing with climbing skins towards Vallon Popera.
