While other resorts are planning their openings, here the season is drawing to a close due to a harsh climate that makes the Pass impassable in winter, with frequent snowfalls and North Pole-like temperatures.
The snow balance for summer 2013 is decidedly positive, and the season now coming to an end has been a fantastic one for the glacier: the huge amount of snow that fell during the winter, a spring that never really arrived, a short summer, and an early autumn preserved the snowpack, ensuring slopes in good condition from June right up to today.
Snow also made a recent appearance on the Stelvio—not only on the glacier, but also at 2,700 m, where a remarkable 100 cm of snow fell, so much that on the morning after the snowfall the Pass had to be closed due to excessive snow.
Road access was quickly restored, and preparations are now in full swing for the All Saints’ Day long weekend, which will host several events such as Easy Camp, the eighth edition of the 3-day snowboard gathering on the abundant snow of Passo Stelvio.
Above all, however, it will be the final opening weekend that draws hundreds of skiers up to high altitude, eager to click back into their skis and kick off their winter season; right now the Stelvio is one of the best destinations for autumn skiing, and skiing on deep, fresh snow before closing is an opportunity not to be missed.
Starting Monday, November 4, the glacier will begin its long winter hibernation, ready to load up on plenty of snow and reopen its slopes right on schedule next summer!
