After bringing winter back to the Alps by dumping more than a meter of fresh snow, the weather front “Medusa” has reached the Apennines. Temperatures have plunged across the Apennine peaks and the first snow has begun to fall, blanketing the northern sectors in particular, such as the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
Snow on Cimone, Corno alle Scale, and Abetone, as well as in central Italy with Ovindoli and Roccaraso once again dressed in white and ready for a new ski season.
In Abruzzo, a remarkable 40cm of snow fell in less than 2 days—a snowfall heavy enough to get the ski lifts running right away; in fact, the first ski area to take the plunge was Ovindoli, which decided to open its doors as early as tomorrow, Saturday, December 1, coinciding with the official start of meteorological winter.
At the Ovindoli-Magnola ski resort, 5 slopes and 3 lifts will open for this Saturday, December 1, while in Roccaraso the lifts will remain closed as they await the new snow arriving over the coming days. Lifts are also still closed at Abetone and Cimone, although conditions are good enough to point toward an opening for the Immaculate Conception long weekend.
As mentioned earlier, a new weather front is on the way that will bring more snow and intense frost, with the snow line dropping and good chances of seeing flakes even below 1000m
