This weekend’s storm brought heavy snowfalls across the entire Alps, particularly at high altitudes; one of the resorts that benefited the most from this early taste of winter is Solda all’Ortles, where 30 cm fell in the valley (1,800 m) and a full 70 cm of fresh snow fell at high altitude (3,200 m).
Yesterday’s snowfall was not even the first of the season for Solda: already last week the mountains of the Alto Adige resort had been covered by a good blanket of snow, though the lift company preferred to wait a little before opening. Temperatures well below freezing made it possible to switch on the artificial snowmaking systems to help build the base layer on the slopes, which will also prove useful for the winter months ahead.
The excellent snow conditions allowed the resort to confirm the ski lift opening date for Thursday, November 1, just in time for the All Saints’ Day long weekend. (Ski lifts open for the 2012 All Saints’ Day long weekend)
