Cervinia opens the winter season on October 13

Matterhorn opening

Once again this year, Cervinia will be the first Italian ski resort to open its lifts; the date has already been set and there will certainly be no delays (since the Plateau Rosà glacier is never without snow): skiing will resume on October 13.

The glacier at the foot of the Matterhorn managed to withstand the scorching summer of 2012 fairly well: conditions remained optimal through late July, and only in mid-August did the lower section of the glacier begin to suffer, exposing ancient glacier ice.
However, its altitude of nearly 4,000 m provided protection against tropical temperatures, and the first weather systems of September brought snow and freezing temperatures back to Plateau Rosà.

The October 13 opening is earlier than last year, when lifts went back into operation only on October 29; perhaps the good condition of the glacier or perhaps skiers’ withdrawal symptoms prompted the lift operators to bring forward the start of the winter season—news that is sure to delight all snow lovers!

Cervinia will kick off its season in October on the exact same date chosen by the Austrians for the opening of the Stubai Glacier; one wonders whether the inimitable Matterhorn or the “modern” Stubai glacier will prove more popular…
