In Alleghe, not just snow

Alleghe

Alleghe is a small village in the province of Belluno, part of the Dolomites area and characterised by Lake Alleghe, which gives the village and the surrounding landscape a very special charm.
The municipality is part of the Civetta ski area, within the Dolomiti Superski, and has 80 km of ski slopes with a total of 25 lifts.

At this time of year skiing, winter sports, snow and fun are the order of the day, but the village of Alleghe is also famous for wood carving, one of the oldest and most traditional crafts of the Dolomites.
So, with a view to enhancing traditions and reviving local crafts, the Consorzio Operatori Turistici Alleghe has organised an international meeting dedicated to wood sculpture from January 16 to 22.

Eight internationally renowned sculptors will take part in the event, creating sculptures in Swiss stone pine, a wood typical of the area, on the theme of the life and mysteries of the mountains.
The event is called the First International Wood Sculpture Symposium and, as Erik Fontanile (president of the Consorzio Operatori Turistici Alleghe-Caprile) says, its aim is not only to rediscover an ancient mountain craft, but also to liven up the centre of Alleghe and give new impetus to local businesses.

Some of the artists taking part in the initiative are Italian, while others come from different parts of the world.
The international figures taking part are Susi Paucker (German), Mario Tapia (straight from Ecuador) and Eugenia Vazquez (Spanish).
Among the Italians, the names that stand out are: Enzo Gobbo, a world-class painter and sculptor who lives and works in Pecol di Zoldo, Franco Daga from Rimini, Claudio Crestale from Vicenza, Guido Raffagli from Marcaria in the province of Mantua, and Remo Belletti from Collagna in the province of Reggio Emilia.

This initiative is just the first in a series of initiatives that will aim to enhance the area and its local traditions and to revive the ancient mountain crafts, but above all to relaunch the whole area, the village of Alleghe and the local businesses.
The sculptures of the Symposium participants will be on display all season long at the Alleghe ice stadium.
