Stubai’s 2011/12 ski season began on September 21 with the opening of the glacier at an altitude of 3,200 m
No fewer than 25 km of slopes are already open to all skiers eager to get their skis back on. A highly respectable ski area that makes the Stubai Glacier one of the most important destinations on the autumn skiing scene.
The snow situation is good: the snowfall of the past weeks brought 60 cm of fresh snow across the whole ski area, confirming the opening date. The snow is still in good condition, helped by temperatures that drop well below zero at night and stay at average levels throughout the day.
Many ski clubs have decided to start their season here: the long runs and fast lifts make Stubai an excellent training ground ahead of the winter season, also considering that the snowpark is not open yet and so the number of snowboarders around is limited.
Unlike Hintertux, on the Stubai Glacier they have decided to postpone the opening of the snowpark to October 21, while scheduling 3 days of celebrations with a truly respectable opening. From October 21 to 23 the Stubai Zoo Park will host numerous events, including trick sessions, snowcamp, rail battle, video workshops and lots of prize competitions; all accompanied by budget holiday deals to attract as many riders as possible to the snows of Tyrol.
But even before the snowpark opens, there is an event worth mentioning that concerns everyone: the “Ski Oktoberfest”, a party in the wake of the deeply traditional German Oktoberfest, with the difference that here the beer is drunk right on the ski slopes. From October 15 to 16, 2011 on the Stubai Glacier, in addition to rivers of beer, white sausages, savoury snacks and Tyrolean specialities will also be served.
One thing is certain: the beer will be ice-cold!
