Abruzzo: all ordinances requiring snow chains on board

Across all of Italy, the requirement to drive with snow chains or winter tires on the road network—provincial, regional, state, and motorway—is back. Although this “anti-snow” measure is governed by the Highway Code, the decision to enforce the regulation lies with public bodies such as provinces, regions, and road management companies like ANAS or others.

In Abruzzo too, as in other Italian regions, the odyssey of ordinances has begun, so we decided to bring some order and highlight the various regulations in force in the region.

Province of Chieti:
From November 15, 2012 until April 15, 2013, vehicles are required to drive with snow chains on board or winter tires on the following provincial roads:

ORDINANCE for STATE HIGHWAYS in ABRUZZO

In addition to provincial roads, the requirement also applies to several state highways crossing all provinces in the region, even where no local ordinance has been issued; below is the detailed list of roads where, starting November 15, carrying snow chains on board or using winter (snow) tires is mandatory on sections of state highways at risk of snowfall or ice formation:

• State Highway 5 “Via Tiburtina Valeria”: from km 65.000 (Oricola, Province of L’Aquila) to km 70.000 (Carsoli, Province of L’Aquila) and from km 98.200 (Tagliacozzo, Province of L’Aquila) to km 184.160 (Bussi sul Tirino, Province of Pescara);
• State Highway 5 quater “Via Tiburtina Valeria”: from km 0.000 (Carsoli, Province of L’Aquila) to km 26.020 (Tagliacozzo, Province of L’Aquila);
• State Highway 17 “dell’Appennino Abruzzese ed Appulo Sannitico”: from km 12.250 (Sella di Corno, Province of L’Aquila) to km 68.592 (Navelli, Province of L’Aquila) and from km 88.287 (junction for Corfinio, Province of L’Aquila) to km 151.035 (Castel di Sangro, Province of L’Aquila);
