After the U-turn on the bid for the 2017 Alpine World Ski Championships, which surprised many in the industry, Cortina seems determined to start again and put all its energy into a bid for the 2019 World Ski Championships.
In fact, the Cortina 2019 Committee met yesterday, Thursday, July 19, to draw up the guidelines for the new bid project. FISI president Flavio Roda reaffirmed the Federation’s backing and support.
Fisi President Flavio Roda stated:
“Fisi supports Cortina and will work in synergy with all the forces backing it, so as to present itself at the next Fis Congress with everything fully in order”
In the presence of Fisi president Flavio Roda, the setting up of the operational team was approved.
Adolfo Menardi will be the contact person for the Sports Group, whose members are Denis Costantini, Matteo Gobbo, Davide Viel, Federico Gaspari, Roberto Gillarduzzi, Alberto Ghezze and Edoardo Zardini. Fabio Taddei, Anna Bosetti and Alessandro de Rigo will work together with Giorgio Gaspari on Resources and Training. The Operations Group will be made up of Stefania Zandonella, Cristian Ghedina and Fabrizio Lucchetti, with Nicola Menardi as manager. Alessandro Broccolo, contact person for the Cortina Turismo tourist consortium, will coordinate Marketing and Events together with Calissano Andrea, Giacomo Giorgi, Michele Canei, Denni Dorigo, Enrico De Bona and Paolo Andreola.
Enrico Valle has been given the task of managing and coordinating relations with the Fis delegates.
Among the objectives, one emerged as a priority: the need to set up a genuine advisory group able to give a voice to and involve all the main players in Ampezzo. Lift operators, hoteliers, shopkeepers and, of course, some institutions such as the Regole d’Ampezzo will take an active part in the new bid project. The World Ski Championships are an important event that will have an impact on the entire area; hence the decision to set up a broader working group.
The mayor of Cortina and Committee president Andrea Franceschi was keen to reaffirm the value of the decision to start again immediately after Korea: “An opportunity to plan all the activities for the coming months in a scientific way”.
Among the new features of the operational team is the introduction of the role of deputy director – to be filled by Michele Di Gallo – who will work alongside director Martin Schnitzer and secretary Marta Gusman. “I feel duty-bound to thank all the guys on the Cortina 2017 committee – Franceschi continued – because the work done is the foundation from which we start again. I take this opportunity to welcome the new guys and wish the whole team all the best”
Cortina is determined to reach its goal this time; the failed bid for 2017 certainly leaves a foundation to work on, but there is still a lot to do. This will be a very interesting test for all of Cortina’s tourism operators, and others besides, who will have to decide not only on the bid for the 2019 World Ski Championships but also on what the new face of the Cortina of the future will be.
